Bowls Turning

Click and be whisked to a short video.
I'm making a bunch of these large porcelain bowls [4-6 kg] for a show in September; so far I've managed to throw, trim and dry a few without mishap [after the first four all mishapped while drying, you may recall]- they still need to survive a bisc firing, crystal glazing and firing, so they have a long way to go. I find that it's important to dry them evenly, especially the rims, but it's very easy to damage them trying to cover them up while they're still fresh, so I've started leaving them on a slowly-revolving wheel until the rims stiffen up somewhat. This morning I threw three [well 4 but one collapsed] and, once they were all revolving, became aware of their kenetic-sculptural nature. I pushed each one a bit off-centre for greater effect.

Helen told me yesterday about a pile of broken blue glass at the end of our street: I don't use too much of it ( maybe I should use more?) preferring green (readily-available) glass when I want glass dribbles on my cream glaze- but it seemed like a windfall not to be passed up, so I scooped some up and washed it in a coarse sieve.

Benyamini Contemporary Ceramics Center

Anna Carmi

The title is a link to their site, where you will note that I am supposed to give a brief workshop on porcelain at the end of July. In fact I'm just the warm-up act for my good friend and amazing ceramic artist Anna Carmi [I start at 3,she follows at 6:30]- a double-header you might not want to miss...

A rather confusing picture, showing large porcelain bowl #5 [the first 4 all cracked drying, you may recall] slightly moon-footed but almost dry and uncracked. This time I used unadulterated Coleman porcelain and took more care trimming; it seems to have worked- now to make a few more and bisc them...What's "moon-foot"? I hear you ask: it's when you don't have the piece completely centered when you trim it,so one side of the foot-ring is wider than the other- then you give it a fancy name so you don't have to sell it as a second [see April 18th blog for another example- the title of this blog is also a link that will whisk you there in a click}.
