I thought I might have finished the current round of crystal glaze firings, but #6 is firing today, probably the last one unless I have time to make a few more pieces to test the new batch of silver nitrate I just bought, and which otherwise may have to wait until next year, since I seem to fire the crystals on an annual cycle. I was going to post a bunch of pictures to wrap up the blog [it's Daniel the Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04713062805929425082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10725145.post-52771530696070745242013-10-31T15:22:00.002+02:002013-10-31T15:22:35.482+02:00The End, My FriendI thought I might keep on blogging 'til February, which would make it a full 8 years, but I see that you, my loyal readers, are few in number, and that I post everything on Facebook now, and I suspect that Google+ is something similar, not to mention Linkedin, who continual pester me [I'm not part of either]- so I think this is it. Katyush, for short- named after the rocket. We acquired her during the last war as a diminutive baby tortoise - she's a tribute to what a diet of lettuce can do for you. Gilad & Yifat brought us some unroasted coffee-beans from their recent South American caper; I've never roasted coffee before, so it was quite exciting- I remembered reading about the first and second "cracks" the beans are supposed to undergo, which they duly did: the culmination of the process [it took about 15-20 minutes] was a very respectable fresh-tasting cup of coffee. &Daniel the Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04713062805929425082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10725145.post-64430451176658527732013-09-11T11:10:00.000+03:002013-09-11T11:10:08.535+03:00What the Pumice Did
I wasn't shocked- I've always imagined pumice as a sort of aerated glass/rock combo. Next to the rather nice grey melty test tile [pumice powder] is a piece of glass someone gave me, supposedly from a volcano...I suppose the next step would be to fire it on a vertical surface to see if it runs- if not,I'd probably use it straight as a glaze, probably on some porcelain, probably on a shape I'd Daniel the Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04713062805929425082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10725145.post-63694825248001907412013-09-04T11:33:00.001+03:002013-09-04T11:33:22.269+03:00New Pots- Hastily Photographed

Accumulated wisdom of 38 years in the craft:
1] If you want to sell- make it blue
2] If you want one, make two
3] Soft clay, slow wheel [Japanese]
4] The customer is usually right, at least until he/she leaves the studio; then count to ten...
5] People have a tendency to buy pottery in the colors of the clothes they're wearing on any particular day
6] A group will always be late

I think there's another youtube video on my channel on pulling handles.

Just before going over to porcelain I'm going to finish off the stoneware with some tea-bowls mainly for the Tel Hai anagama, but also to put a couple in the next salt firing. I'm wedging in some dust from outside Hamada"s studio in Mashiko and some feldspar/quartz grog from Shigaraki [I don't think Minerco stock that] as well as a variety of grades of shamot, molochite and ground-up Daniel the Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04713062805929425082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10725145.post-63004515737562189312013-08-14T13:08:00.000+03:002013-08-14T13:08:01.789+03:00Obscure object
Well did you guess? I grew up with one of these Dartmouth Pottery gurgling fish jugs, a source of endless merriment around the Flatauer dining table, and for years [and years] have wondered how one might duplicate the effect without resorting to plaster molds; the prototype needs more work, but we're on the right track...Daniel the Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04713062805929425082noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10725145.post-11110219513482792002013-08-14T12:45:00.001+03:002013-08-14T12:45:10.321+03:00Nitrogen
I changed 4 tires recently and filled the new ones with nitrogen, which I didn't know you could do; I don't think it's going to change my outlook on life, but it's interesting [most of our air is nitrogen anyway, and most of our problems seem to come from oxygen] and you get these cute valve-caps...Daniel the Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04713062805929425082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10725145.post-36915383400868298522013-08-14T12:34:00.001+03:002013-08-14T12:34:08.679+03:00Porcelain Prices Slashed!I just learned that Ceramicon have dropped the price of my favorite Coleman porcelain from 9+ to 5+ sh. a kilo so I'm off tomorrow to get some before they change their mind...Daniel the Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04713062805929425082noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10725145.post-45532044351895522892013-08-13T12:45:00.002+03:002013-08-13T12:45:27.042+03:00Over the Top
If you want to get the best out of a kiln firing- especially a wood- or salt-firing- I think you occasionally need to go over the top and lose a couple of pots to over-firing; this piece from the last salt kiln is a classic example- beautiful effects and coloring, but really blasted by salt and heat, and as a result welded to its shelf. The rest of the kiln came out very nicely...Daniel the Potterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04713062805929425082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10725145.post-23696562783312244352013-08-12T13:38:00.001+03:002013-08-12T13:38:41.304+03:00We are StardustWe are all also ( & more recently) Recycled Clay: results of a few strenuous hours' work at Tel Hai today turning piles of dried clay thrown out by generations of students into bins of cool inviting multicolored slip.
